My part of the job : screenplay, storyboard, character design, matte paintings, textures/rendering, lighting, compositing/fx, montage.
"Les fantaisies de Margot" (translate "the imaginary world of Margot") is a 9 months hardwork movie, started from scratch.
It's the story of a timid little girl named Margot who is living in a comfy and luxurious world. However she is always playing
by herself with her plush friend Poulpi. Accustomed to her loneliness, she is afraid of adults and
particularly of her oncle Theo, a big impressive fellow, who seems like an ogre to a 5-year-old child's view.
This very evening at a social party given in her house, Margot will flee from her oncle when he comes to tease her
and go hide in her own dreams. But there, she will also have to face her fears.. indeed, she will run into a
monster, representing Theo's alter-ego in her sleep.
The basic screenplay included a more developed plot, there was actually a duel between Margot and
the monster-wizard named Peoo, but due to the short deadline we had to cut the big fighting
sequence off and also a magic scene, what makes Margot less active and the dream less fairy.
At first sight, this movie would rather aim kids and the young ones by its easy-watching storyline
and its funny-looking characters, like Peoo. But the thematic is a bit more deep, it's about the gap
between adults and children's world. Children see things in a different manner, with their own fancy imagination
and inconceivable fears. And that is what we wanted to implicitly point out, so there is a constant parallel
between the dream part and the social party scene : for example the forest creatures corresponding to the guests,
and the fact that they are gathered to take the tea (the character design has been work together, but it's too bad
we can't actually see the guests's faces.. but well, it's a detail..).
Also, there is the sceneries, despite it's a forest there's chairs and tables, even an armchair and a clock
embed in a tree! We had to mix up two distinct universes.
Last point, we have been told a lot about the "manga" part of the short film (when Poulpi comes out from
off camera to rescue her owner and be killed by electric shock), well, as it's a kid's dream i guess
we just wanted to make it fun to watch in order to avoid the dramatic tone of the climax, like a parody.
Hope you'll enjoy it! <3
